When death occurs
When a death occurs, there are often many questions and decisions to be made. This can feel overwhelming, especially during an emotional and difficult time. Our role is to guide you through each step with care, compassion, and clarity.
Whether the death was expected or sudden, takes place at home, in hospital/Hospice, at a nursing home, we are here to help you understand what needs to happen next.
If the death occurs at home
If the death was expected, nurse or physician involved in the person’s care should be contacted first. Once the death has been pronounced and the necessary documentation has been completed, our funeral home can be called and we will arrange to bring your loved one into our care.
If the death was unexpected, please call emergency services by dialing 911. The proper authorities will guide the next steps, and we can assist once we are permitted to do so.
If the Death Occurs in a Hospital or Nursing Home
In most cases, the staff will guide you through the immediate next steps. You may be asked which funeral home you would like to use, and once our name is provided, we will take care of the transfer.
What To Do Next
Once you contact us, we will help you with:
Bringing your loved one into our care
Arranging a time to meet
Discussing burial, cremation, or other service options
Completing the necessary documentation
Notifying the appropriate agencies as required
Information required
We have outlined the information that may be required at the time of arrangements. Some details are needed to properly complete provincial documentation, while others help with applications for death and survivor benefits, as well as estate matters. Please don’t worry if you do not have everything available—we will guide you through the process.
Information required to plan
Much of the same information is required to prearrange a funeral as to arrange one at the time of death. Due to this fact, it only makes sense to prearrange the funeral, for it’s merely gathering and recording necessary information in advance.
We have listed the information required at the time of arrangements. Some of the information is needed to properly register documentation with the province, some to assist with the application of death and survivors’ benefits, as well as matters of the estate.
