Richard Died peacefully died peacefully in Hamilton on January 10, 2024.

He was born in Huntsville the son of Joseph Elmer PHILLIPS and Ina Bernice CRIPPS.  He grew up in his beloved hometown and graduated from Huntsville High School.  After two summers as camp councillor for the Children’s Aid Society he realized his life calling in Social Work and dedicated his life to the welfare of children.

Social Worker

After receiving his certificate in Social Work at age 20, Richard joined the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto.  During his 45 years of service Richard had an amazing record of bettering the lives of thousands of children.  He deliberately took on ground breaking cases that lead the way for Ontario society to become more inclusive, diverse and multicultural.  With no thought of recognition or financial reward Richard served socially disadvantaged children and was an active spokes person for the disabled.  Initially a Case Worker Richard progressed through Child Protection to become Director of the Receiving Centre in Toronto, followed by his favourite work in Child Adoption, setting up of Group Homes & Foster Care placements.

An energetic worker Richard spoke at service clubs, civic meetings and met with politicians to influence how society regarded disadvantaged youth and the disabled.

Musician

While growing up in Huntsville Richard showed an interest in music in general and in particular developed his love of the pipe organ.  At age 14 he played the pipe organ at Huntsville United Church.  He also won awards for public speaking and singing.  Arriving in Toronto Richard continued his musical education by graduating from The Royal Conservatory of Music in voice and piano and became a member of the Canadian College of Organists.

As a church organist and choir director Richard supported and promoted young vocalists and instrumentalists.  Richard was known for presenting concerts that featured top notch talent in support of pipe organ restorations, building funds and fund raisers for worthy causes.  Through his musical endeavours Richard allowed a venue for hundreds of young musicians to showcase their talents and forward their careers.

As a respected churchman Richard served on many committees and boards to support programs that enhanced the lives of the needy.  In short Richard was a positive influence on thousands of individuals in support of a diverse and caring society in Ontario.

Horseman & Dog Exhibitor

Richard showed Hackney horses and Shetland ponies throughout Southern Ontario.  On two occasions his Hackney ponies won championships at the Royal Winter Fair at the CNE.  He also showed Afghanistan hounds and had a Canadian Kennel Club champion winning many ‘Best of Breed’ and ‘Best in Class’ honours.

Richard not content with being just an exhibitor, served as a member or director of several fair boards and pony societies where he continued to push for support of young exhibitors.

College Instructor & Volunteer

Richard continued his educational pursuits by obtaining a Bachelor of Social Work then became an instructor at George Brown College in Advanced Social Work.

With boundless energy Richard volunteered his Social Work and musical skills including counselling para and quadriplegics cases at Lynhurst Hospital in Toronto.  With his guidance and support Richard encouraged injured individuals to realize that their lives were important and that although changed they could still continue their education and become contributing members of society.
