John Herbert Rowntree
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of John Rowntree on March 14, 2026.
John was the beloved son of George and Eva Rose Rowntree of Toronto, and a dear brother to Helen, David, and Don (Sonny).
In the early 1960s, John’s family moved to Burk’s Falls, where he enjoyed his time growing up on the farm. He later made Huntsville his home, where he became a well-known and familiar face in the community. John was often seen walking around town, connecting with local merchants and friends, and collecting items along the way.
John had a deep love for music and records, which brought him great peace and joy. He was a regular at the local record store, adding to his extensive collection each week. He knew many people and considered them all his friends. Special thanks are extended to Ken, Cara, and Trevor for their friendship and kindness.
In 2001, John married Paris Raven, whom he met through their connection with Community Living. Together, they shared 24 years of companionship and care.
John was supported with great compassion by Jess and the dedicated team at Community Living. Their support allowed him to live independently and build the strong community connections that meant so much to him.
In his final months, John was cared for by the incredible staff at Hospice Muskoka – Andy’s House and Hospice Huntsville (Algonquin Grace). Their kindness and presence brought him comfort during this time. John expressed his gratitude in his own special way—through the many pictures he lovingly coloured for the PSWs, nurses, and doctors who became his friends.
A celebration of John’s life will be held in May, with details to be announced on Mitchell Funeral Home’s website.
In keeping with John’s wishes, donations may be made to Community Living or Hospice Huntsville/Muskoka.
